Stop the Flickering of CFLs
The conventional resources are depleting, hence a lot of research is dedicated to find out solutions to find a new source of energy or optimization of the current resources. Even from a household perspective, many small things help in saving energy. For example, the replacement of CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) over the traditional incandescent ones facilitates the reduction in power usage. Also, the CFL has a considerably longer work life. Here are a few tips to ensure your CFL remains in a good condition for a longer period of time.
It is a bad idea to use a non dimmable CFL in a dimmer switch, as it may call for the flickering of the light. Allow the CFL a sufficient time between its subsequent ON (or OFF) positions. Rapidly pressing the button may cause flickering of the CFL. Also, make sure you call in for professional technical help when required.
Refurbishing the Countertop
Maintaining a house is quite difficult, though a few guidelines can surely help ease the pain a bit. Also, many of the household equipments are constructed from materials which, after a few months of usage, start showing signs of wearing. Take your counter tops for example – after a few years, they are bound to get dull. You will definitely think of installing a new counter top, getting rid of the old one. However, such a replacement asks for big bucks. A simple way would be to gather some good paint and replenish the old counter top, breathing in a new wave of air.
Make sure you cover every other object in the near vicinity of your counter top. Sand the top well, while taking care that you do not overdo it. Apply a coat of primer and let it dry. Later, add a coat of your favorite paint (you can also opt for a texture).
Cutting Shelves in your House Walls
When the amount of things stuffed into a room exceed a certain threshold value, it becomes necessary to either throw away the trash or to neatly arrange the components. Though most of us have ready made wardrobes or cabinets, such storage equipments often occupy a considerate amount of floor space. Wouldn’t it be greater if you just cut a couple of shelves inside your walls. This way, you can increase the total floor space of your house and hence a storage space for those randomly lying objects.
It is necessary that you make a rough, and then a final draft of the shelves. This way, you have a thorough idea what to expect after your project is successfully completed. You will have to measure the distance between your two stud walls and accordingly plan the width of your shelves. Use the right tools and observe utmost caution while handling them.
Covering Your Laminate Dresser
In olden times, bedroom dressers used to be made of exquisite varieties of woods like mahogany, maple and beech. However, the increasing rarity of these woods and the associated prices has forced people to look out to new age composite wood articles which have a longer life and come in a large variety of textures & themes. Such laminate composite wooden articles are often seen as a short term property and are disposed off once they start wearing off the shine. It is good to note that you can either use these cabinets as storage for your old records or books (or even crockery).
Use a sand paper to sand the individual components of the dresser. Once done, apply a couple of coats of primer and then a good shade of interior paint. Once done, you can spray a film of protective poly urethane over your replenished composite laminate dresser.
Hanging Your Pictures Using S Hooks
A picture says a thousand words – and what better place to flaunt these thousand words beyond your house? You have at least a dozen places where you can display these special moments or masterpieces (in case of paintings), starting from the living room walls to the stair walls to your bed side table. However, if you choose to display your picture against a vertical support, it is good to tilt the masterpieces a bit from the top, so that when placed at a level higher than the eye level, they can pose a good view.
S hooks are used to hang pictures in such a way that the top tilts a bit ahead while the bottom rests against the support. Such hooks are available in various sizes, classified upon the weight (of picture) it can sustain. Install the S hook on your wall, but make sure you affix it well.
Using Brick Walls for Adding Elegance
With the advancement of the technological aids, and that of the human hunger for more, people have started looking at their houses as more than just a ‘place of residence’. They look at their homes as a statement flaunting their persona. A front wall is the first line of impression and hence it is necessary that one gives a thorough thought to this element. A brick wall is a good option; well it has been adorning millions of structures since ages. Also, unlike the primary notions, you can now advance over to out of the box type shapes for your wall.
Take references from various available media. Check whether the foundation over which the wall will rest is strong enough to support it. If it is weak, you can add a concrete footing and a couple of columns to support your wall. You can attach a gate to the column (embedded within the wall).
