Deer Swimming In The Penobscot River

Deer are outstanding swimmers because of their powerful legs. We caught the one in this picture swimming in the West Branch of the Penobscot River.

Penobscot river is notorious for its exhilarating white water rafting. The rapids are extremely harsh and fast.

The deer must have been frightened when we approached and ran for the water. The deer might have felt trapped — but it quickly retreated back to land — and scampered off.

The Penobscot River is over 350 miles long and is the second longest river in all of Maine. The river use to be heavily used more for Maine’s paper industry. As the industry has declined throughout the twenty first century — the river has been used for recreational usage including fishing, swimming and white water rafting.
