Gulf Hagas is in an extraordinary place — sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of Maine — the massive cliffs and epic waterfalls are bone chilling.

The unique feature of this hiking trail is the glorious delivery of the scenery. Most of the thrilling landscape is separated by less than a mile. The trail is around four and a half miles in, a much quicker 3 and a half miles out, with six different outlooks.

Enough of the particulars, the trail will excite every person who takes it. As long as the weather is fair, the trail should be adequate.

There are a couple hazardous areas, and you want to be extra careful when you’re walking along side the cliffs because one slip, might be your demise.

Enjoy the pictures. Feel free to leave your stories about hiking at Gulf Hagas.

Maine has many hiking trails that lead to secluded areas, regions of the state that are not accessible by vehicle, these places are often difficult to reach — notwithstanding the sore feet and muddy shoes — are usually worth the undertaking.

For instance, it was 5:00 a clock in the evening, the sun was shining bright, we had it embedded in our minds that we were going to accomplish something before the day was over.

We traveled up the Golden Road, and proceeded to begin hiking a trail that we had not previously experienced, the sun was beginning to set, as we started to hike the 2.8 miles in, we were greeted by an unexpected cliff-filled mountain, we quickly conquered the steep inclination, only to lose all of our gains by descending down the backside shortly after reaching the peak.

When we arrived at the body of water, known as “Rainbow Lake”, we were more than satisfied, the best part was the freely available to use canoes as you will see in the pictures below. I’m going do a quick “Gimp” job, to erase the name of the man, who was kind enough to leave the canoes for the fellow-hikers. I’m sure, he wouldn’t mind the credit, maybe, he will stumble upon this blog post one day and laugh.

The fishing must be amazing in this lake, I thought, because the idea of carrying canoes into this destination was an unimaginable thought at the time.

I’ll leave you with a semi-relevant quote by Robert Frost to end this post, followed by a more witty outlook by Jerry Seinfeld.

“Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference” – Robert Frost

“Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason” – Jerry Seinfeld

The first turtles in the world are believed to have existed over 220,000 million years ago. Many of them turtles live to be over 100 years old.

One of the most famous turtles is the snapper, included in the pictures below, they enjoy muddy conditions, weedy ponds, and marshes.

The idea of a snapper turtle snapping is not a myth, they are very cautious creatures and will attack you when giving the chance.

They only attack when provoked, I wouldn’t worry about swimming near the creature, but if you poke a stick at it, be ready to lose a stick or an arm.

They basically just eat tiny animals and aquatic plants, crayfish and other small fish, they also will eat ducklings, frogs, and crab apples.

You will notice in the pictures that we gathered below that the crab apples do not interest the turtle when he feels like he is being attacked.

In Maine, there are 7 species of turtles, that include, Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Eastern box Turtle, Stink Turtle, Wood Turtle, Eastern Painted Turtle, Snapping Turtle, and spotted turtle.

The weather has been exceptional over the last couple weeks as winter winds down.

The landscape is amazing in Northern Maine, acres of unsettled land, that is seemingly untouched by the human footprint.

Unfortunately, I could not capture all of the marvelous scenery, the weather was absolutely freezing on that particular day.

The peaceful environment gives you perspective you wouldn’t have otherwise, in my opinion, slowing down and taking in the scenery once in a while is great advice.

I’m not a professional photographer, nor is anyone who takes pictures for this website, but you don’t need to know the obscure intricacies of photography to recognize a simply beautiful sunset.

In Maine, especially in Northern Maine, we take for granted all the remarkable scenery we witness everyday.

As we drive pass the quiet mountain ranges in our vehicles, hurry for a quick walk to get our miles in, even cursing the snow as it falls without conscience on our driveways and through-out our streets.

The same can be said for almost any location you’re at (besides if you live in a gigantic metropolis). I’m kidding, we should all appreciate the art of architecture.

Taking things for granted is natural, its human instinct, because we are always seeking betterment.

When violence, economic disasters and pure evil are so present in the world. Our perception, the way we visualize everything is cheapened by the negativity. Its hard to look for beauty in today when tomorrow could always be brighter. Of course, that theory in itself is a gamble, and I don’t know if I want to play slots with the casino of life.

In Maine, Moose are one of the most ubiquitous large animals. They are also a powerful creature, easily weighing thousands of pounds.

You need to be careful when driving in Maine, always be on the lookout for Moose, because they are responsible for an incredible amount of accidents each year.

On the other hand, they are fascinating to watch, and not that jumpy. You will be able to take stunning pictures of them, as long as you don’t attempt to scare them off or make too much noise.

You will usually find them out on the roads, around sunset, licking the salt on the roads or relaxing in the waters near.

Of course, they don’t hibernate, so you can find them, basically, anytime of the year.

One of the most famous perspectives of Mt. Katahdin is the view from the top of a hill before you enter Abol Bridge. You can do a search on google images, to find some outstanding shots.

The winter is well upon us, the days have been freezing, and with the struggling economy, its been hard to make time to go out and take pictures.

Its amazing that when we finally get a break with gas prices, we are making less money, and not able to afford the luxury of driving for entertainment purposes.

I’m speaking of the United States as a whole. The mountain started getting snow in late October of this year. I hope everybody enjoys the rest of their winter, snow-filled, or not.

Horses are technically not wildlife in Maine, albeit they are in other countries in the world, but I’ll put them under wildlife anyway.

The amazing creature is part of the species “Equidae”. Horses have evolved from a small multi-toed animal into the large, single-toed mammal we are all familiar with today. There are now over 300 different breeds of horses.

A horses life expectancy is only 25-30 years while some horses have been known to live into their 40’s, its a rare exception rather than a rule. The oldest known horse was “Old Billy” who lived to be an astonishing 62 years old.

As we all know horses love to eat hay and thats their main source of nutrients, but did you know that they can consume 2 percent of their body fat worth of the dry weeds everyday? A thousand pound horse could eat up to 25 pounds of food a day.

Another interesting fact is they require about 10-12 gallons of water in each day.

The peaceful serenity and glorious colors combine to make an outstanding picture. A wonderful sight, it makes you forget all the ills of the world for a second.

Hopefully, we will have more pictures of sunrises and sunsets in the near future. I know, I personally love them.
