Mt – Katahdin – Snow

When Mt. Katahdin is covered with snow, it is a magnificent sight. Maine is known for its chilly winters and bitter cold days. We can’t help, but appreciate the way the snow looks on top of the mountain though. The ice covers the pond elegantly as the pond sits in front of the mile high mountain.

Mt. Katahdin is a great recreational mountain, but is also dangerous. The second highest point in all of Maine — falling short of only Sugarloaf Mountain — is approximately 4,292 feet.

Mount Katahdin is located within Baxter State Park, which is open all year round (strictly regulated during the winter). Most of the deaths caused by the mountain have occurred during bad weather conditions.

My wife and I visited Maine some years ago, and, by accident, ended up in Baxter State Park. After exploring a bit, we were lucky enough to find a vacancy at Kidney Pond, where we stayed two magnificient days and nights. Our daughter was born in 1998 and we’ve promised her that we’d take her to see this glorius place.
Not sure when that will be, but we’ll do it. I would recommend this place to anybody and everybody. It’s an unknown beauty that needs to be seen.

  2. Thank you for sharing your story. Sounds like a trip that could have been a disaster, but you just went with the flow, and it ended up being a memorable experience.
